It’s the time of the year again
The fluttering flags, the corny tv trailers, the singers yodelling about the country while traipsing around the city, the this-is-my-country propaganda, the National Day Parade repeats. As we roll into Aug 9, the intensity snowballs into this burst of dazzling lights and smoke in the sky at the end of the parade.

I’m sorry, I stopped being a fan years ago.

Not because I don’t love my country. I do. I love it like my family. I complain about it. But there’s no where I’d rather be. It’s what home should be – clean, disciplined, Dad setting my gound rules, not a whole lot to do, but comfortable and predictable. Reliable. Bits of it change, but at the very core, it’s always familiar. That’s someplace you come home to.

The abovesaid annoyances are so superfluous. Forty-one years on, do we still need a song each year to remind us why we should feel proud of our lives? Would we forget without the songs, the flags, the fancy show of affection?

Probably, I guess.

Anyway. Have a Happy National Week ahead. I’ll try to detox as we go along. Hopefully this week would be a better detox week for Lilmurmurs and me.
