Mid-Autumn Haze
07/10/2006
I have been so overeating. It started in Malaysia, continued in Vietnam, and now back home since Pete is in town.
Pete can’t understand more than half of what I say. Even though in my head it sounds as American as it can get, I suppose out my mouth is still Singlish. Maybe I mumble. I had the same problem with Mandarin in school. My teachers had no idea what was coming out of my mouth.
The good news is, surprisingly, KF understands what I say enough to “translate” Singlish to American for me! Imagine that.
Pete is also trying to learn Singlish. So he’s been watching TV while waiting for us to get home. He’s not getting very far though.
It’s been really hazy the last couple of days, so I’m blaming my general lethargy to that. I don’t know why, but I’ve had a few more sluggish days than my usual this year. I’m not going to blame it on age, being 26 and all, but it’s like someone sapped my energy levels for the year. I hate going to work feeling only 50%. Harassing the engineers takes a lot more effort than people would believe, and I need every ounce of energy I can get my hands on. Sadly, I’ve only been able to harass them half heartedly, which is very disappointing.
Anyway, tonight we ended up at Newton Hawker Centre despite trying to make it to East Coast Hawker Centre. Seems that there was a big jam on the AYE/ECP so we stayed in the city. I haven’t been there for a few years, but some things are the same. Like the stall owners who aggressively pursue you, to the blistering heat and unbearable humidity. The surroundings were quite pleasant, since the food centre got upgraded and all.
Finally we relented and had this pretty affable looking guy find us a seat and shove us a menu. Grilled prawns (excellent!), crayfish, sting ray (excellent!), fried rice, bean sprouts cost us $82! Half of the cost went to the grilled prawns, which I think was a complete rip off, even if it was good. I think that’s why the guy refused to accept payment until we had finished eating, so we wouldn’t be able to return it! Anyway, that’s the Newton experience, I guess.
This is why I’m getting fat. My metabolic rate is broken, and I can’t stop eating. I better get that fibre thing Donnie was talking about.
