going bananas

Shout out: birthday greetings to Ah Lian. This is the cake we modified for him.
The lengths we go to to entertain.
In other news, I went to my first media event of the year *yawn*, took home a buncha awards and met ex-colleagues. The internet industry is certainly a small one in Singapore.
At the risk of sounding unappreciative and arrogant – there are several reasons why this awards ceremony was meaningless.
- No one with any decent idea measures hits anymore. We measure users, we measure time spent, perhaps even page views.
- Their computation method sucks. They don’t tell local and foreign domains apart very well
- Most of their data comes from home use. Office internet access does not add to the tally
- They filtered the winners to local sites. This is silly, because competition on the internet knows no boundaries
- They categorise sites badly – almost as if a brick and mortar dude came in and listed a bunch of categories off the top of his mind or he stole it from his last job. On the Internet, if you say Community Sites – people think Groups, Chat, etc. They don’t think The Red Cross. How do you serve internet people by perpetuating archaic ideology?
So hey. We swept off with 10 awards, but since in my mind it’s not an accurate measurement of success I’m not exactly over the moon and popping the champagne.
Instead I’ll sit back and gripe and sneer knowing that the local internet industry is just immature and they unaware.
Bad Producer. Stay home all weekend!
