brrr….
29/01/2008
Despite some respite from the rain, the temperatures dipped to something ridiculous, like probably around 4-5°C today. That’s daytime, too. My fingers are in this perpetual state of freeze. And my toes are not faring any better. I’ve finally acquired the appropriate clothing for the weather, and am unabashedly layering.
And I found out how to do it – and more importantly, how to order the stuff I need to layer – on Amazon. What would I do without the internet and the wonders of e-commerce. Ah, that term is so dotcomboom I can’t stand it.
Crazily enough, my primary school teacher added me as a friend on Facebook. I was her second friend. It was her first day on the most viral thing since the H5N1. If Facebook is anything to go by, I’ve got enough friends to fill a bus. Thing is, I’m not really on Facebook to see my friends, or check up on what they’re doing. Not really. I just get on to play a quiz or two, unsuccessfully edit my profile, and respond to messages. Why it’s got the world hooked is still pretty baffling.
how’d that happen?

is, unfortunately, in Cantonese.
I’m not going to spoil it by translating it for you. But giving credit where it’s due, I ran across it here.
it’s storming
05/01/2008
A couple of days ago they started reporting that a series of storms were headed our way, and that residents of the North Bay should get ready – start stocking up on provisions, get sandbags, secure loose bits around the house. They also recommended that residents up in the more rural areas should get flashlights, and bring their chainsaws around. And the Coast Guards put up advisories against heading to the beach.
Yesterday the first storm kicked in and I saw pictures on TV where in the mountains, cars were overturned and snow was everywhere. It’s snowing even in Mexico. They said it was really dangerous to drive up to the Sierras.
I don’t know, something about that seems so distant and rural. Yeah, the Santa Cruz Mountains. Yeah, the Sierra. It’s not here. It’s someplace else.
And this morning, the big storm hit. The power at home went out. So even though my brand new spanky alarm clock was on battery power and was running fine, I got up late because it was all dark outside and I had my earplugs on. Had I not have had my earplugs on, I would’ve heard the ruckus from the wind and the fire trucks outside.
Driving down Fulton it felt like a warzone. Debris was everywhere, and trees were blown over.
Ferry services have been temporarily suspended due to the massive waves. The Bart has stopped running in some areas. Parts of the city are flooded.
I know that it’s a large country and that we don’t really experience super extreme weather back at home and so it’s not fair to compare. But power and transportation outages are so not First World.
So it’s miserable now – wet, dark and sad. The storms are supposed to subside over the weekend. Hopefully I’ll see some sunshine soon.

Well, looking back I really dunnit this year, didn’t I?
2007 started out fine, I think I met V for tea one day. I decided to cut my hair before a huge Big Why “global summit”. Had lunch with Mr G during the conference and we asked about his manifesto. It was fun, but not even lunch with the Big Why’s Jerry McGuire could’ve fixed things, since after all, he’s no Tom Cruise.
Then the lot of us went to Bali, and had a smashing good time. Hey, after 6 years of service, I think I earned a little work-sponsored vacation (albeit to a third world country I wouldn’t otherwise have gone to. Complain complain complain, the insolent brat I am).
Finally after dragging my feet, we said our goodbyes, left the Big Why, and headed for Japan, where we learnt that contrary to popular belief, it isn’t all that expensive if you’re a cheapie like us and don’t mind roughing it out. We had such a good time, hunting for Nintendo, reliving Memoirs of a Geisha, and pigging out.
A couple of weeks after we got back, I finally had to say goodbye to the last remnant of my childhood and that was uncomfortable, unpleasant and uncontrollably unhappy.
And then we moved.
We’ve been here almost six months. We’re still living out of a suitcase, but hey, I treated myself to a nice new toy, got on Facebook and finally got a real haircut the other day. I’m finding out about eczema first hand, tea, and now am licensed to drive. How cool is that?
It is now the start of another day, and another year, I can hear the fireworks going off.
Have a fulfilling, rewarding 2008 filled with joy and mirth, health and contentment, family and friends.
